Like many organisations, St Mary’s church has worked defining its purpose and mission. What is your Mission Statement, we were asked?

At one level, we could have said that we are the Church of England church that seeks to minister, as best we can, to the needs of the 8,000 or so people who live in Great Dunmow and some of the surrounding area. This would have been true, but it doesn’t indicate what we do.

After much thought and discussion, the Church Council decided upon:-

To know Christ better,
and to make Christ better known.

Our first task as Christian people is to know the one whom we follow. Of course, we have been doing this from time immemorial. However, it is an ongoing task, and will only be completed when we see Jesus face to face – then we shall know him fully.

Our second task is the one that Jesus gave his disciples all those years ago. To share the love of Christ, and to help people to get to know Christ, as we preach, teach, talk, care, minister, befriend, welcome and help in so many different ways.

You will see our Mission Statement on our website and in our publications – but, best of all, you should see it more and more in the lives of Christ’s followers and in the caring service of church members.
