Alpha @ St Mary's
Would you be interested in finding out more about the Christian Faith without having to go to Church? Then the Alpha Course could be for you!
The Alpha Course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith. It’s relaxed, non-threatening, low key, friendly and fun. Each session starts with a meal which gives course members an opportunity to get to know one another. After the meal there is either a brief talk or DVD on various aspects of the Christian faith. Then there is an opportunity for questions and discussion. Alpha is a place where you can ask anything. No question is too simple, sceptical or hostile. It’s a place to listen, learn, discuss and discover.
Alpha is for anyone who has questions about the Christian faith. It is for those who never or rarely go to church but have a desire to investigate further and it’s for new Christians or newcomers to the church. But it’s also popular with regular churchgoers who want to brush up on the basics. All are welcome.
There is no charge for Alpha but contributions to the cost of food are always appreciated.
The first St Mary’s Alpha Course took place in the autumn of 2005. Each week between seven and nine guests joined us in the St Mary’s Centre for a meal followed by a DVD addressing a particular aspect of the Christian faith and then some lively discussion and an opportunity to ask questions. All sorts of people came including those who had rarely been to church and wanted to investigate Christianity and regular churchgoers who wanted to look again at the basics of their faith. Some of the topics covered included: Who is Jesus? Why did Jesus die? Does God heal today? How and why should I pray? What about the Church? We also had an excellent ‘Awayday’ at Peter’s Barn in Barnston looking at questions about the Holy Spirit.
We have also held a ‘Lunchtime Alpha’ for people who for whatever reason found it difficult to come out in the evening. About ten people came on this course including young mums and senior citizens.
