    • On Saturday, 11 February at 7.30 p.m., Amanda Michell, a former chorister of St. Mary’s, Great Dunmow, will be returning to her home town to provide an evening of entertainment. The London based horn player will be joined by other young, talented, professional musicians and the choir of St. Mary’s. The programme will comprise a variety of music composed for the horn as well as a selection of solo vocal and choral music. The programme will feature works by famous composers including Mozart and Strauss alongside works by lesser-known but no less worthy composers.

Amanda is currently pursuing a career as a professional horn player having recently completed her Master of Music Degree at Trinity College of Music, London. Amanda is enjoying working as a freelance musician, having spent the past year gaining experience as a period instrument performer with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as well as continuing her development as a modern orchestral horn player. Amanda’s other work has included playing with her brass quintet Lord Nelson Brass, playing on a West End show and a couple of TV appearances.

The proceeds from the concert will be used in the following two ways. A donation will be made to Music and the Deaf, a UK charity which helps the 1 in 7 of the population with a hearing loss to enjoy the world of music. The remainder of the profits will be donated to the St. Mary’s Church Roof Restoration Fund.

The concert starts at 7:30pm Tickets cost £10 each (£6 for school children & students) and are available from The Vicarage (872504).

Faith in Action

published by Patrick Whittick on Wed, 27/12/2006 - 16:16

Jesus said "I needed clothes and you clothed me"... for "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

Matthew 25: 36 & 40 (NIV)

We regularly collect good-quality cotton or light-weight clothing which is sent to the Faith in Action Church, Blantyre, South Malawi, Africa. Many of us have met the leading pastors as they have visited us in England. Some of us have also been to Malawi to visit Pastors and Churches there. We receive written confirmation of the safe arrival of each container.

Church leaders distribute our gifts to the village people, who are very poor as the live off what can be grown in the fields near the villages. Their crops depend on good rainfall at the right time.

Most village people in South Malawi live in mud and thatch houses and usually possess very little, other than a few essential items.

Garments are washed, ironed and folded so as to look as much like new as possible. The items are washed, ironed and folded so as to look as much like new as possible. The items are then placed in individual plastic bags which are labelled with the size and type of garment, and a Christian greeting in the local Chichewa language.

Finally the individual bags are packed and sealed into apple boxes, then taken to a storage container. Once it is full, the container is shipped to Malawi. The cost of shipment is met by the Church groups who pack the boxes.

If you have a gift of good quality clothing, or would like futher information, please contact:

All clothing must be suitable for a warm to hot climate, often humid. Adults do not wear shorts or leggings and the ladies and girls never wear trousers. Polo necks, thick/chunky jumpers or coats are not suitable. The people in the villages tend to be very slim because of the restricted diet.
