    • Start date: Sat, February 11th 2012
    • Start time: 19:30
    • End time: 22:00
    • On Saturday, 11 February at 7.30 p.m., Amanda Michell, a former chorister of St. Mary’s, Great Dunmow, will be returning to her home town to provide an evening of entertainment. The London based horn player will be joined by other young, talented, professional musicians and the choir of St. Mary’s. The programme will comprise a variety of music composed for the horn as well as a selection of solo vocal and choral music. The programme will feature works by famous composers including Mozart and Strauss alongside works by lesser-known but no less worthy composers.

Amanda is currently pursuing a career as a professional horn player having recently completed her Master of Music Degree at Trinity College of Music, London. Amanda is enjoying working as a freelance musician, having spent the past year gaining experience as a period instrument performer with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as well as continuing her development as a modern orchestral horn player. Amanda’s other work has included playing with her brass quintet Lord Nelson Brass, playing on a West End show and a couple of TV appearances.

The proceeds from the concert will be used in the following two ways. A donation will be made to Music and the Deaf, a UK charity which helps the 1 in 7 of the population with a hearing loss to enjoy the world of music. The remainder of the profits will be donated to the St. Mary’s Church Roof Restoration Fund.

The concert starts at 7:30pm Tickets cost £10 each (£6 for school children & students) and are available from The Vicarage (872504).

Please use the Google Map option above to help you find St Mary's; alternatively, the following may be of help for people who are visiting Great Dunmow and don't know the area:

Bishop's Stortford / M11

  • Take A120 towards Stansted Airport & Colchester
  • Turn off at B1256 - signposted to Great Dunmow
  • Turn left at the 3rd roundabout (Signposted into Great Dunmow)
  • After 500 metres turn left at the mini roundabout into Rosemary Lane
  • At the end of this road turn left at the mini-roundabout
  • Go straight over the next mini-roundabout
  • After about 100 metres turn right into Lime Tree Hill (signposted to St Mary's Church)
  • At the bottom of the hill the road swings left in front of The Angel & Harp pub, and then swings right
  • Do not turn right, but rather go straight ahead into Church Street and on past The Vicarage on your left to St Mary's Church. Please park in the Church Car Park beyond the church.

Chelmsford

  • A130/B1008 towards Great Dunmow & Stansted Airport.
  • After the village of Barnston go straight over the double roundabout at the junction with the A120. Do NOT go on to the A120!
  • At the next roundabout, turn right on to the B1256 towards Braintree
  • Take the first road left (Braintree Road) into Great Dunmow.
  • After about 100 yards, turn right into St Edmunds Lane.
  • At the end of St Edmunds Lane turn left.
  • After about 100 yards you cross the River Chelmer. Turn right into Church Street at the crown of the left-handed bend. This is a difficult turn, so please take care! St Mary's Church and car park are directly in front of you.

Braintree / Colchester

  • Follow the A120 and leave at the exit signposted to Great Dunmow and Chelmsford
  • Turn right at the top of the sliproad and follow the short road to the B1256 (the old A120)
  • Turn left towards Stebbing and continue down the old road towards Great Dunmow
  • Take the first road right (Braintree Road) into Great Dunmow after the ancient town sign
  • After about 100 yards, turn right into St Edmunds Lane
  • At the end of St Edmunds Lane turn left
  • After about 100 yards you cross the River Chelmer. Turn right into Church Street at the crown of the left-handed bend. St Mary's Church and car park are directly in front of you.

Thaxted / Saffron Walden

  • Take the B184 to Great Dunmow
  • First left after the Great Dunmow town sign.
  • At the bottom of the hill the road swings left in front of The Angel & Harp pub, and then swings right.
  • Do not turn right, but rather go straight ahead into Church Street and on past The Vicarage on your left to St Mary's Church. Please park in the Church Car Park beyond the church.

Bardfield / Haverhill

  • You'll come in on the B1057 (see top right of map), and should be able to see the church tower from a reasonable distance away!
  • As you follow the road in to Dunmow, you'll go over a small bridge; turn right at the next corner (this is a difficult turn, so please take care!) and follow the road past the church and into the car park.
