Diary of a Country Churchyard
The Diary now enters its third month and it is great that new groups are coming forward to take on the creative challenge of producing a Display for the Dunmow Library and pages in the collective Community Diary, which is also available to read at the Library.
Dunmow St. Mary’s Primary School Wildlife Club
Our thanks go to members of the Wildlife Club for creating bird feeders and bird boxes for the Churchyard and sharing their tips on how you can identify birds and how you can look after wildlife in your garden. Members of the Club joined Rebecca King on the 31st January in the Churchyard for our Big Family Garden Birdwatch. During this event 16 different varieties of bird were spotted. The results have now been recorded with the RSPB as part of their national Big Garden Birdwatch campaign. The birds in the churchyard were also left with some tasty popcorn, temptingly hung from some of the trees – a great idea to try in your garden. Our thanks go to Rebecca for organising this event. If you visit the Churchyard this month try and see if you can spot the 5 new nest boxes created by the children. Hopefully these will now have new feathered residents. The Wildlife Club are all busy working towards their RSPB Wildlife Action Awards and taking part in this project contributes to this.
What’s on in March
The March Display is being created by children at St. Mary’s Church Nursery School. The Nursery enjoys making visits to the churchyard during the year and their trips inspire a number of projects back at the School. During the autumn the children helped plant daffodil bulbs in the churchyard. This month the flowers should be in full bloom, brightening the grass banks near the entrance to the Church. The Display promises to be a colourful celebration of the daffodil and also to reveal more about the dragon hunts that take place in Churchyard!
How you can take part
To help make this a Community Diary we would love to have entries contributed by as many Dunmow residents as possible. We are looking for poems and sayings connected with the seasons or from your own experiences of visiting the Churchyard. We would also love to include your photos.
