Daffodils, Lambs and Eggs
All around are signs of new life. Spring is bursting out of the dark of winter. The anniversaries’ card industry is ready for the next peak, with their pictures or drawings of primroses, chicks, lambs, bluebells, daffodils, Easter bonnets and Easter eggs.
Christians, too, celebrate the signs of new life. The joyful sight of creation renewed lifts the spirit – but nowhere near as much as the joyful news: Christ is risen.
The earliest followers of Christ were bewildered at the course of events in the life of Jesus. Christ had died. Christ was buried. Christ had been seen alive again. They did not know how it happened, but they knew for certain that it had happened. Life could never again be the same – and all who follow Christ cannot be the same again.
God’s eternal Spring has sprung. Christ’s new life brings the promise of new life into our deadness, and new light into our darkness. No wonder Christian worshippers respond joyfully to the declaration that “Christ is Risen” with the words “He is risen indeed, alleluia”.
Come along and join in joyful Christian worship on Easter Day – there’ll be plenty of time for the eggs later.
