Appointment, Election and a New Start
Expectations are, naturally, very high. A new start is imminent. For the newly-confirmed occupants of Bishopscourt and Downing Street they have a fresh mandate to lead; a new programme to introduce; and a whole host of difficulties to overcome. Who is up to such a job, and who would want such a task?
It has become a church and national trait that the newly appointed incumbent of any Office shall been seen as a messiah – or a saviour. We build them up so much that success is nigh-on-impossible – and then we watch and wait for their downfall.
Let me suggest a better way. St Paul urges us “that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2) So, as part of our anticipation as we wait for our new Bishop; and as part of our participation as we elect our new Prime Minister and Government; join your local church people in praying for God’s blessing on these newly appointed leaders because we only get the leaders we deserve – or pray for.
