Just a Thought - May
Back in the days of the Old Testament, there seemed to be plenty of miracles going around. The giants of the Old Testament seemed to have such a close relationship with God that whenever they needed a miracle and even when they didn’t think they did, something amazing would happen. The burning bush, the Red Sea, the Prophets of Baal. I sometimes find myself envious of them and wish that in the times when I have needed it, the same magnitude of miracle might be available to me.
Yet here we are in May and after one of the worst winters in my lifetime, of snow and ice and floods, out of a ground which has been frozen and waterlogged for so many months appears once again the blossom and flowers of May, and once again the earth is carpeted in all its splendour. I know there are explanations as to how it happens and a proven biological explanation of the hows and wherefores, but does anything explain why at this time nature is so breathtakingly beautiful?
Perhaps the age of miracles has not passed; perhaps we have just become too clever and too busy to acknowledge them. Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote the following which has become one of my favourite quotes:
“Earth’s crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God;But only he who sees, takes off his shoes - The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.”Elsie Bouffler (http://blog.mydailythought.co.uk)
