Just a Thought - June 2010
Our teams need support and encouragement, and I am sure that when the manager gives his team talk it is all about building the team up to believe in themselves and their ability to make it to the final. We do the same for our children before a special match or an exam, to give them the confidence to do their best, and there is certainly a need for self belief, when there seem to be so many people who suffer from poor self esteem.
Yet in the words that are so familiar to many of us from our parents, it is also true that “nobody likes a showoff”. So where do we draw the line?
It is sometimes unclear, but I think best explained by the words of Jesus who told us to love one another as we loved ourselves.
Sometimes it comes as a surprise that we are told to love ourselves, but it is right and good to do so, not because we consider ourselves great, not because of our own accomplishments, but because we have been created by God, because the same God who made this amazing world also made us and therefore, to steal from a well known ad “we are worth it”. As for our achievements we should celebrate them, but we should also recognise that we can do nothing without God’s help, and that the glory belongs to him.
Now I’m not sure who will get the glory for victory in this world cup, but for me, I know that it is God and not I who deserves the glory for any of my “victories”.
“In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5 vs 16.
