6 Diary of a Country Churchyard
The Diary of a Country Churchyard is a joint project between Dunmow Library and St. Mary’s Church.
What’s on in June
If you enjoyed Monty Don’s recent BBC2 Mastercrafts TV Series and have been inspired to learn a traditional skill, come and join skilled stone conservator, Antonia Hockton on Saturday 12 June 10am-4pm, Stone Conservation Workshop Day. Antonia will be running a FREE one day workshop in St. Mary’s Churchyard, which will teach people how to care for stone monuments. The day will be practical and hands on. All materials are provided - you just need to come in strong sensible shoes and old clothes. If you would like to know more, or to book a place, please contact Catherine Sale (859767). (Please note that the workshop can only take place in good weather).
In the Library
Children and staff from the Freedom Day Care Nursery are creating the Diary Display for the Library this month. The children are planning a Mini Beast Hunt in the Churchyard and hope to see some butterflies. Their visit will inspire their artwork for the library.
St. Mary’s Riverbank Project
Preparation for the St. Mary’s Riverbank Project is gathering pace. The aims are: to create a new circular riverside walk which will include new tree planting schemes; develop new wildlife habitats; provide increased opportunities for visitors to learn more about nature conservation; and develop community programmes that enable local groups and schools to use the churchyard as an outdoor classroom. Central to any plans are that the character of the Churchyard as a sacred place of remembrance is respected. An important part of the application process is to demonstrate that we have consulted widely over the plans and we would very much like to receive your comments. You can send details / confirmation through the website here; alternatively, cards are available in the Church and elsewhere for you to note thoughts. You are also welcome to get in touch with Sydney Smith (874266) or David Ainge (872504).
How you can take part
If you, or a group you belong to, would like to contribute to the Diary or want to know more about the Riverbank Project please contact Catherine Sale on 859767.
