You are here
The Lord is my shepherd
I shall not want;
he leads me beside still waters,
he restores my soul.
These very familiar words from Psalm 23 are amongst the most well-known words of the Bible. They speak of a peace and tranquillity that many seek - and sometimes find.
Some 3,000 years ago the writer was reflecting on life’s experiences. Every joy seemed to have an equally strong dose of sorrow; every time of laughter soon turned to tears. This is common to all mankind, and has been the experience of many Dunmow and Barnston people in recent months.
Whilst reflecting on his life, the writer did not neglect to recall his background of faith. He had built up a mass of knowledge about the loving mercy of Almighty God, and was now about to draw strength from it. On the basis of what he knew he was going to trust God, for what was unclear.
Couples getting married in church often select hymns that they remember from their schooldays. What a helpful pattern to follow when life turns pear-shaped! Having learnt about God (in church, Sunday school or state school), it’s great to recall those lessons when we need to call upon him. There’s no need to look for new ways of doing things when the old ways are still the best.
