Tomorrow

  1. In Touch With Music
    • Start date: Sat, February 11th 2012
    • Start time: 19:30
    • End time: 22:00
    • On Saturday, 11 February at 7.30 p.m., Amanda Michell, a former chorister of St. Mary’s, Great Dunmow, will be returning to her home town to provide an evening of entertainment. The London based horn player will be joined by other young, talented, professional musicians and the choir of St. Mary’s. The programme will comprise a variety of music composed for the horn as well as a selection of solo vocal and choral music. The programme will feature works by famous composers including Mozart and Strauss alongside works by lesser-known but no less worthy composers.

Amanda is currently pursuing a career as a professional horn player having recently completed her Master of Music Degree at Trinity College of Music, London. Amanda is enjoying working as a freelance musician, having spent the past year gaining experience as a period instrument performer with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as well as continuing her development as a modern orchestral horn player. Amanda’s other work has included playing with her brass quintet Lord Nelson Brass, playing on a West End show and a couple of TV appearances.

The proceeds from the concert will be used in the following two ways. A donation will be made to Music and the Deaf, a UK charity which helps the 1 in 7 of the population with a hearing loss to enjoy the world of music. The remainder of the profits will be donated to the St. Mary’s Church Roof Restoration Fund.

The concert starts at 7:30pm Tickets cost £10 each (£6 for school children & students) and are available from The Vicarage (872504).

General News for both parishes (unless stated)

THANKS FOR THE OFFER OF CAKES - MANY MORE ARE STILL NEEDED! (FOR AUGUST 29TH & 30TH). IThe Countess of Warwick's Show is just 2 weeks away. St Mary's Cake Stall and Refreshment Stall will help our church funds enormously - providing we have hundreds of cakes to sell. Vera Davies has all the details. Latest news: Jo Hargrave (872995) has space in her freezer for cakes. So, make them soon, and freeze them for later.

CHRISTIAN AID COLLECTION AT TESCO'S. The churches in Barnston & Great Dunmow have been given permission to collect for Christian Aid at TESCO's on September 2nd. We now need to gather a band of collectors who, on a shift system, can collect throughout the day. Are you available for an hour or two between 9.00am and 7.00pm? Offers of help should be passed on to Gerald Crowley.

JOIN THE DUNMOW BAT WALK. On Saturday 4 September Sylvia and Roger Jiggins from the Essex Bat Society will be holding a special bat event. It will start at 7.15pm in St Mary's. Bats may emerge and fly inside the Church in which case we will remain in the Church for a while watching them and listening to their calls on the bat Detectors. Then we will go outside and hope to see/hear bats around the Churchyard. Finish will be 8.30ish depending on bat activity and human interest. People should bring torches so they can see where they are walking when outside in the dark. Places are limited so please book in advance - please contact Catherine Sale for details.

INVITATION TO BLACK CHAPEL. The friends at Black Chapel, Ford End have sent an open invitation to any who would like to attend their special service at 3.00pm on the 5th September. The guest speaker is Ben Paine, Development Director of MEDAIR (a Christian charity bringing emergency disaster relief to remote parts of the world.)

RIDE & STRIDE. This annual fundraising event, organized by The Friends of Essex Churches, will be on Saturday September 11th. Both St Andrew's & St Mary's churches get involved in this - please see the notices at the back of church for details.
