Tomorrow

  1. In Touch With Music
    • Start date: Sat, February 11th 2012
    • Start time: 19:30
    • End time: 22:00
    • On Saturday, 11 February at 7.30 p.m., Amanda Michell, a former chorister of St. Mary’s, Great Dunmow, will be returning to her home town to provide an evening of entertainment. The London based horn player will be joined by other young, talented, professional musicians and the choir of St. Mary’s. The programme will comprise a variety of music composed for the horn as well as a selection of solo vocal and choral music. The programme will feature works by famous composers including Mozart and Strauss alongside works by lesser-known but no less worthy composers.

Amanda is currently pursuing a career as a professional horn player having recently completed her Master of Music Degree at Trinity College of Music, London. Amanda is enjoying working as a freelance musician, having spent the past year gaining experience as a period instrument performer with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as well as continuing her development as a modern orchestral horn player. Amanda’s other work has included playing with her brass quintet Lord Nelson Brass, playing on a West End show and a couple of TV appearances.

The proceeds from the concert will be used in the following two ways. A donation will be made to Music and the Deaf, a UK charity which helps the 1 in 7 of the population with a hearing loss to enjoy the world of music. The remainder of the profits will be donated to the St. Mary’s Church Roof Restoration Fund.

The concert starts at 7:30pm Tickets cost £10 each (£6 for school children & students) and are available from The Vicarage (872504).

The Parochial Church Council is in charge of the running of St Mary's Great Dunmow. We meet once a month to discuss forthcoming events, services, finances - in fact, anything which impacts on any part of St Mary's.

Youth Group
The group meets each week and averages ten to twelve members and they are a very lively and enthusiastic group.  We endeavour to organise the evening so that they receive games, discussions and prayer.  Some members have led the discussions and have proved to be mature in their understanding of Christian morals and scripture.

Women's Ministry
In October 2006, during the Walk Roding Mission, Jo Parker, Jo Hargrave and I organised a Ladies' Night at Dunmow Day Centre entitled: 'Thorntons, Johnny Depp and Jesus - What More Could a Girl ask for?' The evening consisted of a variety of speakers, mainly from within our congregation, who spoke of what their faith meant to them, and how it had helped them cope with the ups and downs of life. There was an opportunity to browse at Fairtrade and Bodyshop stalls; to enjoy superb refreshments (mainly chocolate); to make new friends and catch up with old ones.

TIDDLYWINKS

Tiddlywinks caters for children up to and including seven year olds, and we meet every Sunday except the third one in the month. Although our numbers are very low at present we have a happy time sharing news and stories, followed by relevant craft and games.  As always we could use more helpers, and we would very much like to see more children.

Report to the APCM to be held at 8 pm on 26th April 2007
  • The bells have been rung for six weddings since this time last year, with rotas organised by Gaynor Potter. Another ten weddings are scheduled to take place by October 2007, though it is not known if they all will require the bells to be rung.

  • Five visiting bands, two peal bands and three quarter-peal bands came to ring. The Essex Ringing School also came as usual.

The Monday Prayer Group

This group meets in St Mary's Centre every Monday between 2.00-2.45pm. It is led by a different member of the Group each week. The maximum number present has been nine or ten. All have been faithfully intercessing for the needs of the world, our national life, our local community and individuals, for many years.

Pram Service
The Pram Service continues to run every Wednesday morning during the school term in St Mary’s Room. The numbers attending vary greatly but we can usually expect between ten to fifteen mums, dads and carers and about twenty children – so it’s quite a lively gathering! The short twenty minute service consists of action songs, some simple prayers and a bible story for the children told by one of the mums. Tea and coffee follow the service with chat for the adults and play for the children.

Pastoral Visiting Team
A team of eleven members visit at present fifteen elderly people, usually church members, who are housebound, lonely and frail. They provide a source of friendly interest and contact with the outside world, and can be the only visitors an elderly person receives. Team members are committed to regular visiting. We work very closely with the Christian Care Group.

There are small schemes to assist those living alone with simple one-off household tasks such as changing a light-bulb, and to provide transport to enable disabled people to attend church.

Nursery
Saint Mary's Church Nursery opened in September 1997 and at the time Alison Brown and I thought that we would open for six months and "see how it goes"!

We have had a few changes of staff during the past year but we continue to work as a team. Staff have continued to update their knowledge by attending courses on first aid, child protection and language matters during the year. One member is currently studying for the Diploma in Pre School Practice.
